LOCATION
UNIVERSITY of OREGON ARTS VILLAGE
We were tasked by the University of Oregon with adding teaching facilities to an isolated area on the edge of campus, one whose original buildings had a decidedly pragmatic character and were arranged on the site in an ad-hoc fashion. Our solution utilizes the original buildings to form courtyards while reinforcing the hierarchy of existing pathways.
ORIENTATION
Being similarly constrained by budget and wanting to create a building group where both old and new would be understood together, the new buildings treat the old respectfully. Like a collaborator, the new accepts the simple methods and economical materials, but uses them to work out new standards of composition and detail within their vernacular tradition.
ORGANIZATION
Our simple building forms with strong roofs, grouped openings, and purposefully composed siding, result as an act of renewal for the original buildings, and as a means of raising the architectural quality of the group.
